Studio Smeerolie was founded in 2011 by Karlien van Leeuwen:
“I always wondered how visual culture could have such a big effect on people. To discover how this is posssible, I studied Media and Culture at the University of Amsterdam. Grasping how human beings interpretate and react on visual stimuli, I followed the minor Psychonomics, which taught me about the biological ground of subjects like perception, cognition, consciousness and language.
After my graduation in 2006, instead of looking at these functions at a distance, I investigated how I could involve the audience and play with the perception of people during my study at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. In 2011 I graduated with the project “Forget-me-not”, a temporary flower nursery that used the personal input of the visitors to put the Rietveld in bloom.”
